Chickasaw Nation News from Nation Sand Painter - John "Smiling Rock" Julian

MAX McGRAW
It always does my heart good to witness our nation having loads of fun while learning something and actually putting our aims into practice. That's exactly what happened this past May, when the Max McGraw Wildlife Foundation showed us such a great time. The girls...and some dads...learned some basic fishing techniques, then tried them out, and then did some cooking by the campfire. What could be better? Thanks, Sioux!
WHATTA GREAT TENT-OUT!
We also recently enjoyed another successful tent-out. Following a couple of years where we had kinda yucky weather for the tent-out, in this past June we were able to get out and enjoy the outdoors. The Taste o' Chickasaw had cheese fries and buffalo chicken (my mouth just started watering--did yours?) and ice cream and...and...all sorts of good stuff! The next day held more good times á la Chickasaw -- patch draw, treasure hunt, face painting, the processional and council fire and, of course, our very own fireworks show.
I think we were closer to the pyro-excitement this year than in any other year. After that, and a minor domestic disturbance involving some non-IP types, the Cherokee Tribe treated the neighborhood to rides through the woods on a golf cart and the largest bonfire I've personally seen...several vehicles left with blistering paint! Plus, I think we had the first all-nation photo taken.
And...alas, we had a changing of the guard. Say "hello" to Dean "Laughing Panther" Pipes of the mighty Siou -- our new nation chief, as he tries to fill the moccasins of "Splashing Otter," our Sachem. Thanks, Tod, for a job very, very well done.

INTRODUCING - THE 8 FEATHER AWARD!
Chief Laughing Panther has introduced a new program, called the "8-Feather" Award. Designed to make the ultimate goal more achievable, this is a "stepping stone" of sorts on the way to being Haylushka and possibly Haylushka of the Year.
As the name suggests, when a girl earns eight feathers corresponding to the eight different colors of feathers on the Haylushka symbol, she will receive this award. The feathers are:
- Yellow - Know the Indian and Paleface names of all Tribal Members
- Orange - Know all the Aims, Slogan and Pledge
- White - Make a Tribal Craft or Property
- Green - Attend a Nation Campout
- Gold - Bring a new member into the tribe or attend a recruitment event
- Black - Sing "Pals Forever"
- Red - Attend the meeting of another Tribe
- Blue - Attend a Tribal Overnighter
Let's go get 'em, Princesses!

ENROLL NOW FOR THE 2011-12 PROGRAM YEAR!
With one exception, described below, any family attending an event must first "enroll" with our federation, the Algonquin Longhouse, before tit may register for the event. Please visit the Algonquin Longhouse Website to do so.. The enrollment fee for this year is $60.00, lower than in previous years. Once enrolled, each daughter enrolled will receive a T-shirt, which will be distributed by the tribal chiefs.
The one exception: families who are considering joining the Algonquin Longhouse for the first time may attend one nation event without enrolling in the Algonquing Longhouse program and paying the enrollment fee. (You wouldn't be receiving this email if you fell into this category.) Note: families attending a nation event are still required to pay the associated cost of that event.
